TIPS FOR PUPPY BATH

Good hygiene is essential to keep our puppies healthy. Keep in mind that each pet, depending on its breed and its lifestyle, must follow a specific hygiene routine. However, there are a series of guidelines that we must follow whenever the puppy needs a bath. We will tell you about them below!

1. The importance of the puppy's bath

The fur of our pets acts as a defense barrier against the different adversities of the environment, hence the importance of their care. To keep your puppy's hair in optimal condition, you must follow a hygiene protocol that includes routines such as bathing or brushing.

Eye! This does not mean that the more we bathe the puppy, the healthier it will be. Keep in mind that bathing him more often than necessary can lead to the same (or even more) problems than not bathing him. The veterinarian is the one who should determine the bathing routine of your puppy, taking into account characteristics such as age, size, breed, lifestyle, etc.

2. Get your puppy used to the bathroom

In order to make bathing a positive and fun experience for your puppy, it is essential that you introduce this routine progressively, tactfully, and with great patience. Remember that the puppy does not know water as a means of hygiene, so you must ensure that the first contact is not abrupt. If you get a positive first impression, the dog rarely resists bathing in the future.

Where to start? The first thing we will do is wet his legs and part of his body, but we will not bathe his whole. The objective is for the puppy to know the sensation of water on his body and to get used to it.

In the event that the dog accepts water, we will provide rewards to reinforce his good behavior. If, on the contrary, the animal becomes nervous or rejects the water, we must stop and consider continuing at another time. We will never force him, in this way we will only get the puppy to refuse the bath.

3. Products for the puppy's bath

When choosing the best product for the hygiene of our furry friend, we will always bear in mind the criteria of the veterinarian. We will only use brushes, combs, shampoos, and conditioners specifically indicated for pets that fit the characteristics and needs of our puppy. Because obviously a Chihuahua or a Rottweiler does not require the same hygiene protocol.

Obviously, we will never use household cleaning products or hygiene products for humans, as they can cause injuries of varying degrees depending on each animal and the part of the body with which the product comes into contact.

The truth is that not all homes have the necessary means for bathing the pet. If that is your case, you should put yourself in the hands of a professional in dog grooming and delegate the bath of your puppy to him.

If, on the other hand, you are going to take charge of bathing the puppy yourself, we give you some tips so that everything goes smoothly:

The first step in the bathroom will always be brushing. Using the products recommended by the veterinarian, we will thoroughly brush all the animal's fur to remove dirt, dead hair, and knots. Tip: To make the procedure more effective, brush both in the direction of the hair and against the direction of the hair.

Wet the puppy little by little and with warm water. Always try to prevent water from entering his ears.

Apply the shampoo that the professional has indicated. Extend it with a gentle massage and let it act for at least two minutes.

Rinse the product with plenty of water.

We repeat steps 3 and 4. We apply the shampoo again and after two minutes, we rinse again. Make sure to completely remove shampoo residue to avoid itching and burning.

Dry it up. At this point, it is essential to ensure that the puppy's coat is free of moisture. Keep in mind that insufficient drying opens the door to various dermatological alterations. How to properly dry the puppy? We will remove as much water as possible with a towel and if necessary, we will use the dryer, using it at a safety distance of approximately 30 cm. In this sense, it is convenient to accustom the dog both to noise and to the sensation of the air on his body so that he does not reject it. And if we can familiarize you before bathing, much better.
